The radio communication service „Altaj" is on the 9th floor of the TV tower. That night I was there. When I heard them break in, I locked the door. I was afraid that they would destroy the expensive equipment, and the oath of a signaler is to preserve communication until the last moment!
A former co-worker of mine, Anatolij Subotin, led the paratroopers into the tower. They shook the door a few times, but didn't knock it down. The window by the control panel flew out from the noise of a shot... When I heard soldiers charging their guns, I moved away from the door so I wouldn't be shot. Then I heard them joking around. At first it was really terrible, but I got used to it. I got phone calls from the Vice-Minister (Alfredas Basevičius), the enterprise director (Stasys Gražys) and others who encouraged me by saying: „Hold on, the connection is vital."
At about half past twelve on Sunday, Subotin called me on the internal phone and said: „Why didn't you leave with the others?" At first I didn't recognize his voice. When I realized who it was I answered: ”I'm on duty at the control panel."
-„lt doesn't matter. You could have gone flying out of the window. Are you hungry? If you are, say so. I'll send a soldier with a tray."
- “Thanks. I'm full."
- „Soon I'll send a replacement."
In 15 minutes Alexander Krasnov, the former chief of our group „Altaj" came up the stairs, as the elevator wasn't working. He took the keys, saying:
-„Go to the 3rd floor. A soldier's waiting for you. He'll show you out."
He was as white as a ghost himself.
