I was by the television tower on the night of January 12th. News spread that tanks were approaching. Sirens were sounded, people made several rings around the tower, and others ran to the fence in the direction of the viaduct. I saw maybe six people lying on the ground, unconscious. People quickly picked them up and carried them towards the fence. Soldiers surrounded the tower. Since tanks were firing blanks and the soldiers weren't, I went behind the roof of the ventilation well. In the light of the bonfire I noticed that my watch read 2:37.1 couldn't see the tanks' numbers, but one light tank's number was 283, and another's - 286. From above I could see two tanks. Soldiers started moving towards the people, firing at their legs. You could see the bullets piercing the ground. I went down to Cosmonaut Prospect and saw more military vehicles, some smashed cars and a bus with its windows broken out. On the way down the slope, I heard “committee members" shouting over loudspeakers from the tower that they had taken power and were ordering everybody to go home. There was shooting the entire time. Only when I had gone down to the Neris river did I see a signal flare, and then the shooting stopped.
