... Some of the paratroopers were shooting at the sidewalk that was maybe 2 meters away from them. The bullets were ricochetting off the ground into the people. Other paratroopers were shooting right into the crowd.
Once the massacre began and the paratroopers broke into the tower through the broken windows, we realized that it was senseless to continue to defend the tower, so we withdrew. People were falling down, even when we were 30 or 50 meters from the tower. One person was hit by a bullet not far from the stairs to Lazdynai.
