„Budem bratj, čto Ii? Prijom." („We're going to take it, aren't we? Over.") That's what I heard on the evening on January 12 while tuning in my „Šilelis" television set... I live on Tuskulėnų Street, not far from the Northern barracks. The last few nights had been especially restless: engines had been roaring, car wheels had been rattling, tank tracks had been rumbling, and military vehicles had been rolling along Apkasų, Rinktinės and Žalgirio Streets. At about one o'clock on that terrible night you could hear a dull roar... I saw tanks and armored personnel carriers leaving the barracks. They were cutting the black night with powerful searchlights and scanning the balconies of the high-rise buildings with their beams... The tanks and the armored personnel carriers rumbled down Žalgirio Street, followed by trucks labeled „Liudi" („People")... About half an hour later we heard a volley of sub-machine gun fire and cannon shots...
