On January 12 of this year my brother Algirdas Petronis. who lives in Kaunas, and I came to defend the television tower. It was 10:00 p.m. There were a lot of people at the tower. Some were walking around, and others were dancing and singing. The paratroops attacked again, and I got hit from the side. I turned the wrong way and fell under a firing tank. My brother helped me up and we ran about 10 meters from the tower. I noticed that I had lost my cap and rushed back, but a paratrooper appeared in front of me and began to shoot blanks in my face. I looked at him and saw that he was strange somehow - his eyes were glassy and weren't looking at anything. I got away from him. Then I saw that the tanks were moving towards us and were beginning to push us away. It was a horrible sight. My brother and I moved back by the building at the foot of the tower where the underground entrance is, because it was impossible to stand in the square any longer. Tanks were chasing people, and you could hear that they weren't firing blanks any longer. I also saw tracer bullets coming from the direction of the tower. They were going over the people's heads. The tanks continued to fire.

After a while, when the people had already been cleared away from the tower, a tank began to drive along the street again, followed by some kind of vehicle. Over the loudspeaker you could hear a voice which dared to address us as “brothers and sisters". That was an awful mockery at us.
