On the evening of January 12th we met at the television tower, walked around, and sang. Everyone was in a good mood. At about 1 a.m. we saw a green flare, and then tanks began to surround the tower. We made four human chains around the tower. When the tanks began to shoot at us, we sang the hymn „Marija, Marija". When the tanks moved we chanted: “Lithuania! Lithuania!" The entire chain stood calmly, offering no resistance (we didn't have any weapons) and shouted: „Shame, shame!" I stood there until a woman's voice announced over the loudspeaker that we should retreat because the tower had already been taken. We watched as the aggressors beat our guards inside the tower with sticks, and as the dead and the wounded were carried away. Going back to our buses we heard firing. The streets were filled with tanks and overturned cars, and the buses had been beaten and were without windows.
